Point of arrival gives the cheapest rate for currency exchange in Barcelona, although you’ll also want to leave with at least two days worth of cash to pay for incidentals such as the cab, some food, or unexpected expense on the way to your hotel. And by the way, be hugely careful with your money. Barcleone is the worst place in Spain for pickpocketing. It’s also the most expensive city in the country. Read on about currency exchange Barcelona.

Three most common ways to change currency in Barcelona:

Banks – Barcelona’s best banks are La Caixa, Catalunya Caixa, Caixa Penedes, and BBVA.  They accept most Visa-based and switch cards and, certainly, give you better rates than street kiosks or your hotel, major stores and the airport. Incidentally, their posted rates outside will also help you, since you can compare their ratio to the ratios applied by the exchange kiosk.

Banks open Monday to Friday from 9am to 2pm. Some remain open to noon Saturday. If you carry American Express, there is an AM office in the city centre (Paseo de Gracia 101. Phone:  93 217 0070) that opens from Monday to Friday (9:30 to 18h) and on Saturday from 10-12. It has the cheapest rates around.

ATMs – Barcelona has plenty of ATM (also called “cash machine” or “cashpoint”) in major stores, hotels, the streets, and banks. Choose to convert into Euros rather than your local currency; you’ll get more buck for your dough. Also, choose an ATM located in a bank rather than the street for safety and because these are less likely to be tempered with. Most ATMs accept debit card – Visa, Mastercard, Cirrus or Maestro, not Interact. Rates are good – you receive the real exchange rate when you withdraw your money, so this is usually your best option when it comes to currency exchange in Barcelona

The worst choice is:

Street Kiosks  – use these as a last resort, since they tend to rip you off.  These Bureaux de Change/ street kiosks/ forex providers operate long hours and are usually open for limited trading on Sundays, (usually 11:00-15:00). Some may seem to offer terrific rates, but these apply only when changing large amounts. Many are known for handling dated currency and/ or for giving you too little for your cash.

Incidentally, credit cards, including AMEX, are widely accepted in most of the high street’s shops, restaurants and hotels so you can change money in Barcelona there. Note that smaller restaurants and hospitals still lack credit card payment facilities.

Alternately, you may want to buy a simple small gadget (often on a keyring) like a calculator, available in most travel stores that converts keyed-in amounts into the currency of your choice.  You can also change GBP or dollars to a traveller’s cheque or a pre-loaded card before traveling to Barcelona.
